Everything You Need to Know About IEEE Membership at UVCE
I was indeed enthusiastic about the IEEE club, as soon as the notification regarding the membership of IEEE was sent in Junior Senior group, I eagerly went to fill up the form.
It had one section called category, i.e. you needed to pay money for the IEEE membership and it had numerous choices. Different sorts of mixed societies, CS society, AESS, PES, PELS, WIE, etc. Multiple combinations were available to choose from. I was perplexed, and had much ambiguity in my mind, what to choose? What will I get through this membership? Is it worth? Should I have any sort of background knowledge to apply?
I then messaged our senior Likhitha akka, I asked her what is all this? Can you help me with some insights? I knew that she was an IEEE member, hence she must be apt to help me out. I asked her which combination did she pick and how much did she pay last year? I asked her if I could meet her, and I went to college today, discussed many a lot things.
Membership vs. Being a Member
So Likhitha akka is a member of IEEE. So what’s the difference between membership of IEEE and being the member of IEEE?
See currently the link which we’ve received is for the IEEE membership. This is accessible worldwide. Anyone around the globe can have an IEEE membership. You pay certain amount of fees according to your areas of interest.
- You’ll have access to research papers,
- You get a special tag while attending workshops, or events,
- You can connect globally with IEEE.
- There is an IEEE app too, once you register for membership, I guess you’ll be able to access.
The Recruitment Process
Now speaking about being an IEEE member. Likhitha akka said that after the IMPETUS event (probably in March) there will be recruitments for being a member of IEEE.
There will be two rounds of testing to be an IEEE member.
Firstly, a Google form link will be provided in which there might be a few easy questions. Based on the answers in the google form, the students will be shortlisted.
Secondly, the shortlisted students will have to appear for an interview.
Basic technical skills will be tested not any high end stuff. The other set of questions will be based on your behavioral pattern, i.e. your confidence level while answering, your communication skills, your management skills.
Like one question which Likhitha akka was asked:
"Let suppose there are two events in college at the similar time, you have interest in both. Which will be your priority? IEEE event or the other?"
These are the similar questions where we need to butter up.
So this is the process to be an IEEE member.
Membership Validity & Timing
Some more details regarding the membership: The membership every year is released in January and stays active till December. You can even take the membership in June too, but it’ll be active only till December. Hence it would be more beneficial to take it in January itself, so that you get a longer access to the content.
Understanding the Domains
CS – Computer Society
It’s a technical domain, where you’ll get coding sessions, practice competitions, the various activities that you might have heard to or seen such as HackerRank, Ncode, etc are major attractions.
PELS – Power and Electronics Society & PES – Power and Energy Society
Both of them are related to circuital branches, more related to the ECE and EEE subjects. Mostly beneficial for those branches.
WIE – Woman In Engineering
This is a special society wherein you can witness many inspirational stories, talks, attend lectures by highly qualified, respected women who have achieved their excellence in various fields.
AESS - Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society
This a said to be a booming society, much about aviation and the electronics related to flying.
SIGHT – Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology
It’s an active wing which focuses on mainly humanitarian efforts and introduction of technologies to those who are deprived of or far away from access to much technologies.
- Humanitarian efforts include blood donation camps etc.
- They go for a monthly visit to govt. schools based on sites allocated.
- In schools they spend a whole day with the students, teaching them, basic idea of computers, giving them some chocolates, small gifts, etc.
Summary & Pricing
For now, for CSE students, most likely it would be better to take IEEE Membership + CS + WIE + SIGHT (Rs.999).
For EEE or ECE, you can go for PES & PELS.
AESS is pretty much good but there is no combination as AESS + CS. Else you need to go for everything (Rs.1299).
I would like to give a special thanks to Likhitha akka for giving her time and clearing all ambiguities.
Additional Notes
While the information above covers the student perspective perfectly, here are a few quick technical additions regarding the global benefits:
- IEEE Email Alias: Getting a membership often grants you a professional
@ieee.orgemail alias, which looks great on resumes. - Spectrum Magazine: Members usually get access to the IEEE Spectrum magazine (digital or print), which covers the latest engineering trends globally.
- Networking: Beyond the college level, your membership ID can sometimes grant you discounts on international IEEE conferences if you plan to publish research papers in the future.
